Over this past weekend the Boston Raptors' Pee Wee Team traveled to The Rinks at Exeter to compete in the Summer Showdown. The Pee Wees came home with the Championship Trophy on Sunday by defeating the previously undefeated first place team, the Lovell Blue Chips, 4-3 in the semi-finals and then outscoring the Maine Blizzard 5-3 in the finals.
The Pee Wees lost to their semi-final opponent, The Lovell Hockey Blue Chips, 2-1 during the preliminary round so the semi-final game was expected to be a barn burner.
The semi-final contest met and exceeded all expectations. It was a back and forth nail biter. The game remained scoreless for the first 24 minutes. The Raptors finally scored at 6:01 of the 2nd period for a 1-0 lead. It then appeared the Raptors would get through the first two periods without allowing a goal. But the Blue Chips wouldn't cooperate as they broke into the Raptors' defensive zone and tied the game at 1-1 with only 5.3 seconds remaining in the 2nd period.
After a quiet first two periods the goal scoring erupted in the 3rd period as both teams scored a total of 5 goals in the final stanza. The Blue Chips scored first in the 3rd period to go up 2-1. The lead was short lived though as the Raptors scored three minutes later to tie the game at 2-2.
The Blue Chips scored with only 2:01 left in the game to go up 3-2. Their celebration was short lived as the Raptors scored only 26 seconds later to once again tie the game. This time it was 3-3.
It looked like the game would go into overtime until the Raptors were able to bust through the Blue Chips defense and score with only 17 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Raptors an exciting 4-3 come from behind victory and a spot in the Summer Showdown Championship Game.
The Pee Wees would now face the Maine Blizzard who defeated the Seacoast Spartans 4-3 in overtime to advance to the Championship Game.
The Raptors came out flying in the Finals and quickly went up 3-0. The Blizzard slowly fought back and with only four minutes remaining in regulation time closed the gap to 4-3.
Down by 1 with only one minute remaining the Blizzard pulled their goalie for an extra skater. The Raptors took advantage of the empty net and scored with only 46 seconds left on the clock to ice the game and win the Pee Wee Major Division of The Rinks at Exeter Summer Showdown.
